All I ever wanted was a tiny place where I could belong.

Not a grand house.
Not a fancy house.
But a simple house.
A house with history and mystery.
A house that loved me as much as I loved her.

A house that would breathe synchronously with my spirit.

I would hang tattered lace curtains and allow my goats to often visit the wood stove in the kitchen.

The neighbors would say I was odd.
But that would be ok.

I'd have a cow who loved me and knew her name.
And  my dog would always know my dreams.

I'd collect old things belonging to the dead and promise to love them because no one else would.

And wear a handmade shawl and always a hat and never clean the mud from my boots.

I would read at night by candlelight.
And listen to the hush.

I'm quite sure that mice would live in my walls.

But the first thing I would do, the very first thing, would be to plant wild violets everywhere.

And my cat would slumber there.

Oh my! You have perfectly described my dream life, and, in many ways, my ACTUAL life. Hee hee.I only ever dreamed simple dreams too - those, we can make come true:) A wonderful poem that speaks from heart to heart.

What a beautiful poem for the picture. You've also made me realize how lucky I am to be living the life you've described. We really are kindred spirits!

"a cow who loved me" — how wonderful, to be loved by one's animals, and to mystify one's neighbors!
I thought of Teresa as soon as I read this, and I see she saw herself in there, too.
I enjoyed this poem ever so very much.

This is a thing of beauty. I love the honesty of the narrative voice, and have to admit it is a poem I wish I had written - my fave of the bunch so far. Thank you for sharing on Real Toads.

I'm right there with you on everything! My dogs bark incessantly at mice in the walls, though! This was absolutely gorgeous, love!

It is usually the simple things in the end, which mean the most, isn't it.

What a beautiful dream...when I was five years old I went to my great grandmother's house.it was tiny...deep in the woods..no electricity, lit by oil lamps, and the beauty of hearing their voices uninterrupted by electronic noise.

I would never recommend a goat in the house... they are very messy. But they make great lawn mowers and "attack dogs" ha ha. This poem was wistful, eccentric, and full of imagination! Nice, nice work.
